Now that is Fast…
Like the rest of the world, we watched in amazement as the Chinese government reacted swiftly to the Coronavirus outbreak and proceeded to build a 1,000 bed, hospital in 10 days… They then went on to build a further 1,300 bed hospital in 12 days. The Coronavirus outbreak occurred in late 2019 and by January 2020 the Chinese government were already taking the lessons that they’d learnt from the SARS outbreak and had mobilised to build two dedicated hospitals in order to try and contain Coronavirus by isolating people suspected of being effected and equally isolating the healthcare workers who were looking after them. This approach proved to be extremely effective when it came to managing and ultimately containing the SARS outbreak.
Isn’t it wonderful when you can just make decisions and get on with things… The Chinese government simply chose a suitable site and then on the 24th of January they had 95 excavators, 33 bulldozers, five heavy rollers, 160 dump trucks, 160 managers, 2,240 workers assembled and getting on with it.
These hospitals were all connected to the water and sewerage systems, they had power, phone and the internet al hooked up. They had positive air pressure systems in place (to control the spread of infection) and all the relevant hospital equipment and personnel in place. They broke ground on day 1 and then on day 11 they were accepting patients and underway…
Now nothing is perfect and there are some critics (as there always are…) but compare this to other hospital building projects… For example, the Greymouth hospital tender was awarded in 2015, construction of the 56-bed hospital began in 2016… Construction of the hospital has had numerous delays and it is now hoped that it will begin to open its’ doors sometime in March 2020…
