There is no doubt that the last couple of years in the building industry have been challenging for all involved. While it’s too early to predict a recovery, there are signs that things are beginning to turn around.
The number of new dwellings consented in the Christchurch, Selwyn and Waimakariri areas in the 12 months to August 2024 increased 3% over the number of consents issued in the same period in 2023.
Comparing August 2024 to August 2023 we see a 9% increase for the month. Although we can’t read too much into this, it may be a sign that the general malaise is beginning to lift and some positivity is beginning to creep back into the industry.
With Christmas fast approaching, it won’t be until the first months of next year that we see the numbers firm up, but it is reassuring to see some of the numbers beginning to turn around.
