Welcome to the September edition of Hamptons Happenings.
In this issue we:
In each issue of Hamptons Happenings, we have shared some information on various members of the team at Hamptons ITM.
This month our man in the spotlight is Damien Van-Den Hondel.
At Hamptons, Damien is the man who is responsible for ensuring that everything our customers want… reaches them in-full and on-time.
As you can imagine there are more than a few moving parts involved – timber buying, suppliers, transport in, sign-in, quality control, storage, picking, packing, sign-out, transport out, Hiabs, builders, foremen, site location / layout, mud, weather, health and safety… the list goes on and on.
Damien is a man who’s constantly juggling, deep in thought and if he doesn’t have a phone to his ear then he is probably about to…
Damien hails from Kaikoura and grew up in the small seaside town along with his brother and two sisters. As a young man, Damien enjoyed all things sport and played soccer until he was 12 and then realised that in Kaikoura there was no soccer team for anyone over the age of 12. Out of necessity, Damien jumped codes – and he went on to play senior level rugby at no. 6, representing both Kaikoura and also Marlborough. Damien was also pretty handy with a bat and played cricket for both Kaikoura and also Hurunui.
When Damien first left school, he worked for Kaikoura ITM supplying and helping the many handymen, builders and farmers in the district. Like a lot of young men who grow up in rural New Zealand he decided to explore the world and spent some time across the ditch in both Sydney and Perth. Damien moved to Christchurch and while working in dispatch for a local appliance specialist he would ring David Fleming up fairly regularly and enquire about opportunities at Hamptons. Eventually David ‘saw the light’ and Damien joined the Hamptons team in 2006.
Some years later, someone else who ‘saw the light‘ is Damien’s wife Megan. Damien’s brother was a DJ on the dance scene in Christchurch and he introduced Damien to a friend of his… Megan was a fellow DJ, spinning vinyl on the decks into the wee hours of the morning at least 3 days a week. The rest as they say… is history.
Another example of Damien’s ability to deliver on-time and in-full with cool, calm efficiency is the arrival of Damien and Megan’s daughter Isla. After being sent home from Christchurch Woman’s Hospital by the midwife, Damien ended up dealing with Isla’s delivery until the ambulance and a rather sheepish midwife eventually arrived.
After nearly 17 years working for ITM… to say that Damien knows a thing or two about the trade – is a bit like saying Andre Agassi knows a little bit about the game of tennis!
In our last issue of Hamptons Happenings, we showcased the incredible technology behind the next America’s Cup.
This month, we’ll share with you a selection of very clever and innovative products from a UK firm called Ten Fold Engineering.
Ten Fold create amazing disruptive, mobile and self-building structures.
Check out this video to see how their unique system of perfectly balanced and weighted levers work… to literally construct everything from pop-up (and out) houses, bridges, hotels, solar panels, shops, stadiums, medical centres and more…
|And there’s more…|
Incredible to see how a few simple principles can be applied to so many different situations…

For the month of September at Hamptons we will be celebrating all things decking. We reckon that September is a pretty good month to build or upgrade a deck. The weather is usually a bit warmer and more settled and so it’s a great time to take on an outdoor building project and once you’re done – you (or the lucky folk you’re helping) will get to enjoy the new or revitalised deck all summer long.
To get you inspired, we’ll share some great examples of decks and be generally tipping our hat and celebrating all things decking.
